Affleurements des roches profondes de la croûte océanique et du manteau sur le mur sud de la fracture Kane (Atlantique central) : observations par submersible ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Cannat, M; Gente, Pascal; Henriet, Jean-pierre; Juteau, Thierry; Karson, J; Lagabrielle, Yves; Mevel, Christophe; Tivey, M.
The aim of the 20 Nautile dives of the recent Kanaut cruise was the study of the Kane Fracture Zone from its intersection with the Mid-Atlantic Ridge up to 80 km to the west. The dives have been conducted along four massifs located along the southern wall of the fracture valley. The flanks of the massifs consist of slightly tilted peridotites, gabbros and basalts, which have been exposed along normal and strike-slip major faults. No dike complex similar to that observed along the ZF Vema was observed The observed sections show pervasive cataclastic deformation and greenschist-facies metamorphic overprint.

Bathyluck’09 Cruise (Lucky Strike). Horta-Horta (Portugal), August 31st - September 29th 2009. NO PourQuoi Pas ? - ROV Victor 6000 – AUV AsterX ArchiMer
Escartin, Javier; Cannat, M.
The aim of the project BATHYLUCK (BAThymétrie–HYdrothermalisme–LUCKy Strike) is to a) understand theinterplay between tectonism and volcanism along the zone of crustal accretion of a slow-spreading ridge, b) constrain the physical and chemical characteristics and temporal evolution of hydrothermal activity associated with a slowspreading segment and the active processes that occur within, and c) the effect of spatial and temporal variations in hydrothermalism on geo-microbiological interactions at the scale of the site. We propose an integrated, multi-scale study of the Lucky Strike hydrothermal field and its setting, that will be one of the first of such kind at a slowspreading ridge. This project is also a necessary step to establish a long-term seafloor...

Evidence for major-element heterogeneity in the mantle source of abyssal peridotites from the Southwest Indian Ridge (52 degrees to 68 degrees E) ArchiMer
Seyler, M; Cannat, M; Mevel, C.
A suite of 53 samples of mantle spinel lherzolites and harzburgites dredged at 13 sites between 52degreesE and 68degreesE along the Southwest Indian Ridge has been studied for petrography and mineral major element chemistry. Results show that the residual mantle beneath this very slow-spreading/cold ridge is strongly heterogeneous in modal and mineral compositions at local and regional scales and underwent greater extents of melting than predicted by melting model and by compositions of the basalts dredged with the peridotites. Along-axis, the peridotite compositional variability defines a concave pattern with increasing depletion at both ends of the studied section (e. g., approaching Rodrigues Triple Junction to the East and Gallieni fracture zone to the...

FUJI Dome: A large detachment fault near 64 degrees E on the very slow-spreading southwest Indian Ridge ArchiMer
Searle, Rc; Cannat, M; Fujioka, K; Mevel, C; Fujimoto, H; Bralee, A; Parson, L.
A continuous, domed detachment surface ( FUJI Dome) has been imaged on the very slow-spreading southwest Indian Ridge using deep-towed side-scan sonar, and has been investigated by manned submersible and sea-surface geophysics. The Dome is morphologically similar to other oceanic detachments, core complexes or mega-mullions. In addition to bathymetric mullions observed in ship-borne bathymetry, finer scale spreading-parallel striations were imaged with the side scan. On the detachment surface, metabasalt crops out near the termination, probably as part of a thin fault sliver. Gabbro and troctolite probably crop out near the summit of the dome. The rest of the detachment surface is covered with sediment and rubble which is basaltic except for a single...

Première exploration in situ de la dorsale médio-Atlantique au sud de la zone de fracture Atlantis (29"06'N-43"1l'W) ArchiMer
Auzende, Jean-marie; Tivey, M; Cannat, M; Gente, Pascal; Henriet, Jean-pierre; Juteau, Thierry; Karson, J; Lagabrielle, Yves.
During the Kanaut cruise of the submersible Nautile and its mothership Le-Nadir (15 November-16 December 1992), one dive was devoted to the detailed study of a specific area of the neovolcanic ridge of the MAR around 29-degrees-06'N and 43-degrees-11'W. This study emphasizes the importance of the juxtaposition and the stacking of hundreds of small volcanoes in the construction of a neovolcanic ridge and confirms the general observation made from multibeam and side-scan sonar data. The very large magnetic anomaly associated with these massifs favours an extreme freshness.
